Chapter 7 - A Visitor in the Dark

Back at the federal correctional facility, Genevieve sat in the stark, concrete confines of the warden’s private office, the heavy oak door locked securely from the inside. The room smelled of old leather and expensive pipe tobacco. Sitting across from her was not Warden Miller, but a weathered man with sharp, familiar eyes and silver hair combed straight back—her father, Chris Berlinsky, wearing a tailored federal visitor’s badge that granted him unrestricted access.

Genevieve’s dark blue coat draped loosely over her shoulders as she clutched a steaming cup of black coffee between her hands. Her knuckles were still slightly bruised from the tight grip of the handcuffs the day before.

"Marcus called," Chris said quietly, his voice thick with emotion as he reached across the desk to cover her hand with his own. "Julian is breaking. He’s already trying to throw Chloe under the bus to save himself."

Genevieve didn't smile. There was no joy in her heart, only a cold, hollow emptiness that had replaced the shock of her betrayal. "Throwing Chloe under the bus isn't enough, Dad. They destroyed a year of my life planning this. They turned my friends against me, stripped my board seats, and treated me like a criminal in my own city."

"And they are going to pay for every single second of it," Chris replied, his eyes hardening with a resolute fire. "The federal prosecutor has enough wire fraud and securities manipulation charges to lock them both away for the rest of their natural lives. But there's a complication."

Genevieve looked up sharply, her brow furrowing. "What kind of complication?"

"Chloe isn't just a socialite playing dress-up, Gen," Chris explained, sliding a confidential intelligence dossier across the desk. "Her family name isn't Sullivan. It’s Vance-adjacent. Her uncle sits on the federal banking oversight committee. The moment Julian’s assets are frozen, her family is going to try to use political immunity loopholes to seize control of our remaining patents."

Genevieve opened the dossier. Inside were encrypted financial trails linking Chloe’s hidden Swiss accounts directly to the politicians who had fast-tracked the investigation against Genevieve in the first place. It was a massive, systemic web of corruption that went far beyond Julian’s personal greed.

"They planned this as a hostile government-backed seizure," Genevieve whispered, horror dawning as she connected the dots. "Julian was just the front man. Chloe was the political anchor."

"Exactly," Chris nodded grimly. "Which means taking down Julian and Chloe is only phase one. To truly protect our family legacy, we need to expose the entire political syndicate backing them. And to do that..." Chris paused, sliding a small, unmonitored cell phone across the desk. "...you need to walk out of these gates before the week is over."

Before Genevieve could process the sheer audacity of her father's plan, a sharp, urgent alarm klaxon began to wail throughout the prison compound, accompanied by flashing red emergency strobe lights overhead.
