Chapter 12 - Ambush in the Pines

The sharp crack of the gunshot tore through the quiet upstate air, shattering the fragile sense of security. Genevieve instinctively dropped low, her hands covering her head as a second bullet sparked loudly against the stone pillar beside the carriage house door.
"Get inside! Down!" Chris Berlinsky roared, grabbing Genevieve by the shoulders and forcefully shoving her through the open doorway as wood splinters showered down around them.
Marcus vaulted out of the sedan, his service weapon already drawn, dropping into a tactical crouch behind the engine block. He scanned the dense, fog-choked tree line where the headlights had flashed.
"Who's out there?" Marcus shouted over the pattering rain, his eyes narrowed in deep concentration.
From the shadows of the pine trees, a heavy, distorted voice echoed back through a megaphone. "Chris Berlinsky! Send the girl and the vault keys out, or we burn this entire property to the ground with everyone inside!"
Inside the dimly lit carriage house, Genevieve pressed her back against the thick stone wall, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at her father, who was calmly unlocking a heavy steel weapons locker embedded in the back wall.
"Who found us?" Genevieve asked, her voice tight with tension. "Only Marcus and a handful of federal agents knew this location!"
"Not federal agents," Chris said coldly, pulling a customized tactical carbine from the rack and checking the chamber. "Sterling had a private mercenary security detail answerable only to his family trust. They're trying to tie up loose ends before the grand jury convenes tomorrow morning."
Genevieve’s mind raced. They weren't safe anywhere. As long as the physical vault keys to the Berlinsky trust existed, hit squads would keep coming for them. She looked around the rustic room, her eyes landing on an old heavy iron fireplace poker leaning against the stone hearth.
"Dad, they don't want the company anymore," Genevieve realized with sudden clarity. "They want the physical ledger hidden inside the main vault downtown. The digital files can be altered, but that paper ledger proves they murdered my mother's industrial patents thirty years ago."
Chris stopped, staring at his daughter with a sudden mixture of shock and profound pride. "You knew about the ledger?"
"Mother told me before she passed," Genevieve whispered, her eyes flashing with absolute resolve. "If Julian and Chloe get their hands on that ledger, they can rewrite our entire family history."

Outside, a loud metallic crash echoed as a heavy-duty all-terrain vehicle rammed straight through the wooden perimeter gate, its high-beam headlights blindingly sweeping across the front lawn of the carriage house, pinning Marcus behind the sedan as a hail of automatic gunfire chewed up the vehicle's doors.
