Chapter 4 - The Raid at Dawn

The morning sun cast a pale, weak light across the federal prison yard, but inside Cell Block B, the air was electric with tension. Genevieve sat upright on her narrow cot, fully dressed in her coarse orange jumpsuit, though her heavy dark blue coat remained draped across her shoulders like a stolen talisman. She hadn't slept a wink. Every tick of the institutional clock brought her closer to the seismic shockwave her father had promised.
At precisely 8:55 AM, the compound’s public address system crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by the warden's urgent voice summoning all block guards to the central administrative hub for an unscheduled federal briefing. Genevieve watched through the barred door as Guard Miller dropped her coffee mug, cursed loudly, and sprinted down the corridor alongside three other officers.
Within minutes, the cell block was unnervingly quiet. The collective inmate population sensed the sudden shift in power dynamics, holding their breath as if waiting for a storm to break.
Miles away in downtown Manhattan, the glass-and-steel monolith of Vance Global was waking up to a normal, arrogant Tuesday. Julian Vance stepped out of his private elevator onto the executive penthouse floor, a fresh espresso in one hand and his tablet in the other. Chloe Sullivan was right behind him, wrapped in a silk robe, laughing about a society gala they were attending that weekend.
"Can you believe the judge actually looked us in the eye and gave her the full ten?" Chloe purred, swirling her diamond-encrusted rings. "Genevieve is officially history, Julian. We won."
Julian smiled, a sharp, predatory grin that reached his eyes. "Winners write the history books, Chloe. And I just acquired the final block of Berlinsky shares this morning. By noon, our names go on the building."
He swiped his keycard against the massive mahogany double doors of his corner office—and froze.
The red LED light on the security panel blinked furiously, shifting from green to a harsh, pulsating amber. A synthesized female voice echoed from the ceiling speakers: System lockdown initiated. Federal warrant execution in progress.
Before Julian could curse, the heavy glass doors of the elevator bank slid open with a violent ping. A tactical unit of armed federal agents, clad in heavy black Kevlar and helmets, poured out into the hallway, led by a tall, broad-shouldered man with a blonde ponytail tucked neatly under his tactical cap—Officer Marcus Vance.
Julian’s color drained instantly. He dropped his espresso, the dark liquid splashing across the pristine white Italian marble floor.
"Julian Vance," Marcus announced, his voice echoing authoritatively across the executive suite as he stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate espionage, and the systematic embezzlement of pension funds."
May you like
Chloe shrieked, dropping her phone as two agents pinned her arms behind her back. Julian stood paralyzed, staring at the cold metal cuffs in Marcus's hands, realizing with absolute horror that the trap had just snapped shut.
