Chapter 8 - The Prison Lockdown

The red strobe lights washed the warden’s office in a frantic, rhythmic pulse. The piercing shriek of the prison alarm drowned out any further conversation, vibrating straight through the floorboards. Chris Berlinsky pocketed the unmonitored cell phone with practiced speed, sliding deep into the shadows of the heavy bookcases lining the office wall.
"Stay calm, Gen," Chris whispered urgently, his hand resting on a hidden emergency release panel beneath the mahogany desk. "This lockdown isn't a drill. Marcus pushed the button from the outside to create a diversion. You need to get to the west wing maintenance shaft right now."
Before Genevieve could answer, the office door was violently rattled from the hallway. Heavy fists pounded against the reinforced oak wood, accompanied by Guard Miller’s furious voice shouting commands to unlock the door immediately.
"Inmate Berlinsky! Step away from the desk!" Miller roared through the reinforced glass panel.
Chris pressed the hidden release button. With a pneumatic hiss, a heavy section of the bookcase swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow utility tunnel lit only by emergency floor strips.
"Go, Gen! Now!" Chris urged, giving her a firm push toward the secret passage.
Genevieve didn't hesitate. Pulling her heavy dark blue coat tightly around her, she slipped through the opening just as the oak door splintered under a heavy tactical ram from the hallway. She heard her father’s voice shouting a distraction just as the secret panel clicked shut behind her, plunging her into the cool, damp darkness of the maintenance shaft.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she scrambled forward on hands and knees, the metallic tang of old copper and dust filling her nose. She crawled for what felt like hours, guided only by the faint, flickering green glow of the exit floor markers. Every sound—a dripping pipe, a distant vent vibration—echoed like a pursuing set of boots.
Finally, she reached a heavy steel floor grate overlooking the prison’s subterranean loading dock. Peering down through the wire mesh, she saw an idling laundry delivery truck with its rear doors wide open. Standing beside the driver was none other than Officer Marcus Vance, casually smoking a cigarette while tossing industrial linen bags into the back.
Marcus glanced up directly toward the ceiling grate, his intense blue eyes catching the dim emergency light. He didn't speak, but he gave a subtle, sharp nod of his head, tapping his watch twice.

Genevieve understood the signal instantly. She located the manual latch release on the side of her grate, pushed upward with all her remaining strength, and dropped silently down into the sea of soiled canvas laundry bags just as the truck’s diesel engine revved into life, accelerating out into the rainy night.
