Chapter 11 - The Dominoes Fall

The fallout from the public broadcast was instantaneous and catastrophic for the political elite. Within thirty minutes of Marcus uploading the cryptographic data package, the federal courthouse steps were swarming with investigative reporters, camera crews, and Department of Justice internal affairs investigators. Senator Sterling was intercepted by federal marshals before he could even exit the holding cell wing, his expensive silk tie ripped off as he was forced down onto the polished marble floor and slapped with federal corruption charges.
Inside the unmarked sedan, Genevieve watched the live news coverage on her phone screen with a heavy, unblinking stare. The anchorwoman’s voice trembled slightly as she read breaking statements from the Attorney General’s office announcing a sweeping, multi-state investigation into Vance Global and its political backers.
"It’s working," Genevieve murmured, leaning her head back against the headrest. The crushing weight of the ten-year sentence felt distant now, replaced by the bitter reality of systemic corruption that had nearly destroyed her entire family.
Marcus shifted the car into drive, pulling out into the rainy Manhattan traffic with practiced calm. "Sterling is going down, and Chloe Sullivan’s legal defense just imploded. Without her uncle's political shielding, the prosecutor is charging her as a co-conspirator in the grand larceny counts."
"What about Julian?" Genevieve asked, turning her head to look at Marcus.
"Julian tried to swallow the ceramic vial when the marshals stormed the cell," Marcus replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "They pumped his stomach in time, but he's facing a minimum of twenty-five years without parole. He won't see daylight until he's an old man."
Genevieve looked out the window at the towering skyscrapers of Vance Global—the building her grandfather had built brick by brick, which Julian had tried to steal out from under her. A cold satisfaction settled into her chest, but it wasn't enough. The company was currently frozen under federal receivership, its assets locked in legal limbo.
"My father's safehouse," Genevieve said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Take me there. There's one final asset Julian and Chloe didn't know about—the physical vault keys to the original Berlinsky trust."
Marcus glanced sideways at her, noting the resolute determination etched across her face. He gave a slow, approving nod, signaling his turn toward the George Washington Bridge heading upstate.
Twenty miles outside the city, nestled deep within the dense, foggy pine forests of upstate New York, stood an old stone carriage house that doubled as Chris Berlinsky’s operational headquarters. As the sedan crunched up the gravel driveway, the heavy oak doors swung open, revealing her father standing in the doorway, illuminated by the warm amber light of a crackling stone fireplace.

Genevieve stepped out of the car, breathing in the crisp, wet pine air. As she walked up the stone steps toward her father, a sudden flash of headlights illuminated the tree line behind them, followed by the chilling sound of a gunshot ringing out through the misty night air.
