Chapter 1 - The Echo of Betrayal

The fluorescent lights of the federal courthouse hallway buzzed with a sterile, mocking frequency. Genevieve Berlinsky stood frozen in her heavy dark blue double-breasted coat, the gold buttons catching the harsh glare. Cold steel bit painfully into her wrists, anchoring her to a nightmare she still could not comprehend. Ten years. A decade of her life stolen by a stroke of a corrupted pen.

Across the polished marble floor, Julian Vance stood arm in arm with Chloe Sullivan. Julian’s dark suit was immaculate, tailored to perfection, hugging a physique that reeked of newly acquired corporate wealth. Chloe radiated in her sleeveless pink satin dress, her blonde hair catching the light as throwing her head back in a shrill, triumphant laugh that echoed off the stone walls.

"Enjoy 10 years, Genevieve," Julian called out, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. "We’ll spend every cent."

Genevieve took a deep, shuddering breath. Her tearful eyes locked onto his with a terrifying, frozen calm.

"Steady," she whispered to herself, fighting the absolute dread threatening to crush her lungs.

Beside her, Officer Marcus Vance—a towering man with blonde hair tied in a tight ponytail—shifted slightly. His gloved hand brushed against hers in the shadow of her heavy coat, swiftly slipping a small folded white note card into her fingers.

"Don’t cause a scene," Marcus muttered under his breath, his face a mask of absolute professional indifference.

Genevieve’s pulse hammered against her ribs, but her expression remained an icy shield. She stared straight ahead, catching the reflection of Marcus’s intense blue eyes in the glass partition.

"Call the number," Genevieve whispered, her lips barely moving, a ghost of a voice meant only for him. "Tell Chris Berlinsky his daughter was framed."

Marcus leaned down, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly hum that only she could hear over the distant chatter of reporters.

"Tomorrow your husband loses everything," Marcus whispered back, his eyes flashing with a hidden, dangerous promise.

Genevieve was pulled toward the exit, the heavy metal doors swinging shut behind her, but her mind was already racing miles away. As the prison van doors slammed shut, plunging her into absolute darkness, she unfolded the damp note card in her lap, squinting at the hastily scribbled sequence of numbers—and realized Julian had no idea who he was really messing with.
