Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Cell Block

The metallic slam of the solitary confinement heavy steel door echoed like a gunshot through the damp, concrete bowels of the women’s federal correctional facility. Genevieve clutched the tiny, frayed piece of paper Marcus had slipped her like it was a lifeline thrown into a raging ocean. The guard on duty, a burly woman with a permanent scowl named Miller, tossed a scratchy gray wool blanket onto the rusted iron cot.
"Lights out in ten, inmate," Miller grunted, her boots clanging rhythmically against the floor as she walked away, leaving Genevieve alone with her suffocating thoughts.
Genevieve sat heavily on the mattress, the springs groaning in protest. Her dark blue coat was heavy and restrictive, but she refused to take it off; it was the last tangible armor she had left from her old life. She pulled the folded note card from her pocket, smoothing the creases against her trembling knee. The numbers written in bold, hurried black ink were unmistakable: a direct, unlisted rotary line to an encrypted satellite phone.
Her father, Chris Berlinsky, had been a ghost in the corporate intelligence world for decades. Julian thought he had completely neutralized the old man by orchestrating a hostile takeover and freezing his medical assets, but Julian had gravely underestimated the deep, sprawling roots of the Berlinsky family. Genevieve knew her father was alive, hiding in the shadows of upstate New York, nursing a shattered heart and a burning desire for retribution.
She stood up, pacing the cramped concrete perimeter of her cell. Three steps forward, three steps back. The weight of the ten-year sentence hung over her like a guillotine blade, but the whispered words of Officer Marcus Vance kept replaying in her mind. Tomorrow your husband loses everything. How could a beat cop sitting in a municipal courthouse promise the total destruction of a billionaire tycoon like Julian Vance?
There was a deeper conspiracy at play, a rotten foundation beneath the sparkling facade of Vance Global. Julian and Chloe had meticulously built their empire on stolen patents, offshore accounts, and forged signatures, but Marcus held the master key.
Genevieve approached the small, heavily barred window high up on the back wall. Outside, the night sky was choked by heavy smog, glowing with the orange light of the distant city skyline where Julian and Chloe were undoubtedly celebrating their victory with champagne and caviar. She clenched her fists, her fingernails digging into her palms. She would survive this subterranean hellhole. She had to.

A sudden, sharp metallic scrape echoed from the ventilation shaft above her toilet. Genevieve froze, her breath catching in her throat as a tiny, rolled-up metallic foil packet dropped silently onto the floor.
