Chapter 14 - The Final Vault

The underground drainage tunnel echoed with the sound of their heavy boots splashing through ankle-deep water as they emerged near the muddy banks of the upstate river. The distant glow of the burning carriage house painted the rainy night sky an angry, vibrant orange.

Marcus pulled open the side door of a rusted utility van hidden beneath a camouflage tarp, tossing his tactical gear into the back. "That explosion bought us twenty minutes before local authorities and the remaining mercenaries figure out we slipped through the drainage system."

"Where to?" Chris asked, climbing into the passenger seat while wiping soot from his silver hair.

"Downtown Manhattan," Genevieve said firmly, sliding into the back seat and pulling her dark wool sweater tight. "The federal receivership office holding the original Berlinsky trust vault opens at 8:00 AM. If we aren't there with the physical keys to claim our legal assets, the bankruptcy court will auction off the family estate to Senator Sterling’s secret blind trust."

Marcus slammed the van doors shut, taking the wheel with intense concentration. "It’s a suicide run. The entire financial district is crawling with federal marshals and investigative reporters looking for the next scoop on the Vance Global collapse."

"It’s the only play we have left," Genevieve replied, her voice leaving no room for argument.

Dawn broke over the Manhattan skyline in a bruised sweep of purple and gray clouds as the rusted utility van navigated the blocked-off streets of the financial district. Marcus parked two blocks away from the towering granite courthouse where Genevieve’s nightmare had begun just days earlier.

The steps were already packed with news vans, microphones, and camera crews broadcasting live updates on the downfall of Julian Vance and Chloe Sullivan. As Genevieve stepped out of the van into the cold morning air, she didn't hide her face. She walked with her head held high, her posture resolute, shedding the ghost of the terrified woman in handcuffs who had stood in that exact spot a lifetime ago.

Chris walked beside her on her left, while Marcus secured her right flank, his hand resting near his service belt. They strode up the massive stone steps, ignoring the shouting reporters whose camera flashes erupted like lightning storms around them.

Genevieve reached the heavy bronze double doors of the courthouse archives, pulling a small, heavy brass key from her pocket—the key her mother had left her, designed to fit the master vault inside the basement archives.

She slid the key into the brass lock. It turned with a heavy, satisfying mechanical click.

As the massive iron doors slowly swung inward, revealing the gleaming rows of safe deposit boxes inside, a sharp, familiar voice called out from behind them on the steps.
