Chapter 9

The flashing red and blue lights from the cruisers parked outside cast frantic, shifting shadows across the opulent crystal chandeliers of the foyer. Heavy boots echoed against the marble floor as backup officers surged into the mansion, securing the perimeter and sealing every exit. Marcus holstered his service weapon, stepping forward to meet the lead responding officer while keeping a watchful eye on Julianna. Two patrol officers moved swiftly toward the aristocratic couple, their silver handcuffs gleaming in the harsh light before snapping securely around Arthur’s unresisting wrists.
Arthur offered no resistance. He slumped forward, his tuxedo jacket dragging slightly as he allowed himself to be led away toward the exit, muttering incoherent apologies to no one in particular. Julianna, however, held her ground with chilling defiance. As an officer reached for her wrists, she wrenched her arms back with sharp, aristocratic indignation, her face contorted in a mask of pure fury.
"Do you have any idea who my family is?" Julianna hissed, her voice cutting through the noise of the bustling hallway. "You are making a catastrophic mistake. This boy is a disturbed ward of the state under our legal protection. You cannot touch me!"
"Save it for the magistrate, Mrs. Vance," the senior officer replied flatly, securing the cuffs around her slender wrists with practiced efficiency. As they led her past the spot where Elena sat cradling Noa, Julianna cast one final, venomous glare down at the child. The look was so laden with malice that Noa instinctively burrowed deeper into Elena’s shoulder, trembling violently.
Marcus knelt down beside Elena and the boy, his stern demeanor softening into profound gentleness. He pulled a warm, clean woolen blanket from an emergency kit brought in by the medical responders and draped it carefully around Noa’s shivering shoulders. The boy’s hazel eyes looked up at the detective, wide with a mixture of lingering fear and tentative relief.
"Can you stand, buddy?" Marcus asked softly, offering a reassuring hand. "We have an ambulance waiting outside with blankets, food, and doctors who are going to take very good care of you."
Noa hesitated, his gaze shifting from Marcus to Elena. He tightened his grip on the front of Elena’s black uniform, whispering, "Will you come with me?"
"I'm not leaving your side, Noa," Elena promised, pressing a gentle kiss to his messy light brown hair. "Not ever again."

With Elena supporting his weight and Marcus clearing the path ahead, they guided the eight-year-old boy out of the luxury hallway where he had suffered in the dark for so long. As they stepped through the grand front doors into the cool night air, the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles illuminated the sprawling grounds, washing away the oppressive darkness that had gripped the estate for years. Paramedics rushed forward with a gurney, wrapping Noa in thermal foils and offering him a cup of warm broth. The boy took his first small sip, a tiny spark of life returning to his pale cheeks as he realized the nightmare was finally over.
