Chapter 10

The sterile fluorescent lights of the county hospital emergency room buzzed softly, casting a clinical glow over Room 4. Seated in a comfortable vinyl armchair beside the bed, Elena held a warm cup of tea between her hands, watching over Noa as he slept. The boy rested deeply against the crisp white pillows, an IV drip hooked up to his arm to replenish his dangerously depleted fluids. His messy light brown hair had been gently washed, and the dirty grey shirt had been replaced by a soft, oversized hospital gown. Though the physical scars of malnutrition and neglect would take months to heal, the haunting terror in his hazel eyes had softened into peaceful slumber.
A soft knock at the door interrupted the quiet. Detective Marcus stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. He closed the door quietly behind him, pulling up a metal stool to sit across from Elena.
"How is he holding up?" Marcus asked in a low voice, nodding toward the sleeping boy.
"The doctors say he’s severely malnourished and dehydrated, but his vital signs are stabilizing," Elena replied softly, setting her teacup down on the bedside table. "They’re running psychological evaluations in the morning to assess the long-term impact of his confinement. Marcus... how did this happen? How could people like Arthur and Julianna hide a child in their own home for years without anyone noticing?"
Marcus sighed, opening the manila folder to reveal a stack of financial documents and legal records. "Greed, Elena. Pure, unadulterated greed. Digging into the Vance family records tonight uncovered a dark history. Noa is the legitimate heir to a massive multi-million-dollar trust established by his late grandfather. Arthur and Julianna were appointed as his legal guardians after his parents died in a suspicious car crash when Noa was just a toddler. But the trust stipulating his inheritance stated that if Noa died or became permanently incapacitated before his tenth birthday, the entire estate would revert directly to Julianna and Arthur."
Elena’s blood ran cold. She stared at the sleeping child, realizing the horrific magnitude of the plot against him. "They were going to kill him before he turned ten."
"Right before his tenth birthday, which is coming up in just two months," Marcus confirmed grimly, tapping a finger against the document. "They built that hidden wall compartment years ago to keep him permanently hidden from social workers, auditors, and guests. To the outside world, they claimed he was sent to an exclusive boarding school in Europe. They used forged medical records and bribed local bureaucrats to keep up the charade."
"Monsters," Elena whispered, her hands clenching into tight fists. "They treated him like an animal to steal his inheritance."

"Well, their corporate empire and social standing are about to collapse," Marcus said firmly, closing the folder. "Warrants have already been issued for financial fraud, child abuse, kidnapping, and attempted murder. The district attorney is throwing the book at them, and with your testimony and the physical evidence from that wall, they will never see freedom again."
