Chapter 1

The heavy velvet drapes of the grand hallway muffled the sound of the ticking grandfather clock, but they could not silence the quiet, desperate weeping echoing from behind the decorative wainscoting. Inside the suffocating dark of a hidden wall compartment designed during an era of dark domestic secrets, eight-year-old Noa sat crouched on the cold floor. His messy light brown hair was damp with sweat, and his pale cheeks were tracked with dried tears. His dirty grey long-sleeve shirt clung to his shivering frame. He lifted his tear-stained hazel eyes toward the faint sliver of light bleeding through the seam of the wooden panel. His voice was barely a breath when he whispered into the void, asking for rescue.
Moments later, the muted sounds of a high-society gala drifted down from the upper levels, punctuated by the rustle of stiff fabric. Elena, a forty-five-year-old housekeeper with her dark hair neatly twisted into a bun, paused near the corridor’s recessed lighting. Dressed in her crisp black maid uniform with its immaculate white collar and apron, she carried a neat stack of fresh white towels. Her footsteps halted instantly as the faint sob reached her ears. She turned her head, her gaze locking onto the decorative wood paneling that looked entirely normal to any casual guest, yet possessed a microscopic misalignment.
Her heart dropped into her stomach. With trembling hands, she shifted the towels against her hip and reached out, pressing a concealed latch she had never noticed in her five years of service. The panel clicked and swung outward on well-oiled hinges, releasing the stale, trapped scent of dust and fear. Inside that gloomy cavity, Noa looked up like a trapped animal. Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened in absolute shock and horror as she stared down at the emaciated child. Noa reached out a pale, trembling hand pleadingly, his small fingers grazing the edge of the opening.
"Noa, please save me, I'm so hungry!" he whimpered, the raw desperation in his young voice shattering the quiet dignity of the opulent estate.
Before Elena could fully process the nightmare unfolding before her eyes, the frantic sound of hurried footsteps echoed sharply against the polished hardwood floor. Arthur, fifty years old with sharp features and short dark hair, rushed down the hallway in a panic, his black tuxedo and bowtie slightly disheveled. Right behind him strode Julianna, fifty, her blonde hair coiffed to perfection, wearing an expensive dark blue evening gown that shimmered under the crystal sconces. She held a crystal flute of champagne in one hand, her expression unnervingly cold and detached. Arthur froze, his eyes darting from Elena to the open wall compartment, his face draining of all color.
"Noa, what did they do to you?" Arthur blurted out, his voice cracking with a mix of genuine dread and calculated performance.

Elena dropped the white towels; they landed with a soft, muffled thud on the Persian rug. She looked between Arthur and Julianna, the terrifying truth dawning on her. But Julianna did not panic. Instead, the elegant woman stepped forward with slow, deliberate grace. She raised her champagne glass with a menacing, cruel smile while looking down into the dark compartment. Noa recoiled slightly, his eyes filling with renewed terror at the sight of her. As the boy reached out instinctively for protection, he let out a sharp cry of fear. Julianna merely sipped her sparkling drink, her gaze as cold as winter frost.
