Chapter 3

The heavy oak door of the service exit clicked shut behind Elena as she slipped out into the chilly night air, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The sprawling estate grounds were eerily quiet, illuminated only by intermittent decorative lanterns casting long, distorted shadows across the gravel pathways. She wrapped her arms around herself, realizing she had left her heavy wool coat inside the staff locker room. Yet, the biting cold of the autumn wind was nothing compared to the icy dread pooling in her stomach. She needed to get off the property, find a telephone, and contact the authorities before Arthur and Julianna realized she had not complied with their threats.

Back inside the manor, the confrontation in the hallway had escalated. Arthur slammed the wooden panel shut with a heavy thud, cutting off the dim light filtering into Noa’s prison. The boy cried out in sudden darkness, his muffled screams echoing faintly through the wainscoting. Julianna stood impassive, swirling the remaining champagne in her glass.

"You let her get away, Arthur," Julianna hissed, her aristocratic facade finally cracking to reveal a simmering panic. "If she goes to the police, the trust fund, the estate, our entire social standing—it all vanishes overnight. They will tear us apart in the courts."

Arthur wiped his forehead with a silk handkerchief, his breathing rapid and shallow. "I told you that wall was outdated. We should have relocated him to the basement facility weeks ago, but you insisted on keeping him close in case the auditors asked questions about his whereabouts."

"Do not lecture me," Julianna snapped, setting her empty glass down with a sharp clink on a mahogany console table. "Fix this. Follow her. If she reaches the front gates, make sure she never makes it to a phone."

Arthur hesitated, a flicker of genuine human hesitation crossing his features before greed and self-preservation extinguished it. He turned and marched toward the main entrance, his tuxedo jacket swirling around his legs.

Outside, Elena hurried along the winding gravel drive, her black uniform shoes crunching loudly against the stones. She realized too late that the main security gates were nearly a mile away, surrounded by high iron fences and motion-activated cameras monitored directly from the estate's central security office. If she attempted to run down the main road, Arthur’s vehicle would intercept her within minutes. She needed an alternative route, a way through the overgrown perimeter woods that bordered the neighboring property.

Diving off the gravel path, Elena plunged into the dense thicket of oak and pine trees lining the estate's western boundary. The sharp branches clawed at her black skirt and tore at her white apron, while hidden roots tripped her steps. She stumbled forward, catching herself against the rough bark of a pine tree, her breathing ragged. Behind her, the sharp beam of a vehicle's headlights swept across the edge of the woods, illuminating the foliage with an unforgiving white glare. Arthur was searching for her.

She pressed herself flat against the trunk of a massive oak, listening intently. The low rumble of an engine idled nearby, followed by the crunch of tires slowing down on the gravel drive just beyond the tree line.

"Elena!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the quiet night, carrying a sinister edge. "Come out now. You're only making things harder for yourself."
