Chapter 13

Weeks turned into a peaceful, steady rhythm of healing inside Elena’s sunlit apartment on the quiet outskirts of town. The stark contrasts of the Vance mansion—the cold marble, the heavy velvet drapes, and the suffocating hidden wall—were replaced by the warm scent of simmering soup, soft pastel walls, and the gentle hum of a radio playing old acoustic melodies. Noa sat at the small wooden kitchen table, meticulously coloring a picture book with a box of brand-new crayons. His messy light brown hair was neat, and the healthy color had finally returned to his pale cheeks. He wore a soft, comfortable blue sweater instead of the dirty grey shirt he had worn the night Elena found him.
Elena stood by the stove, stirring a pot of homemade vegetable soup while watching the boy with a heart full of quiet gratitude. The legal process had moved swiftly in their favor; with the overwhelming evidence Marcus provided and the complete collapse of Arthur and Julianna’s defense, the state family court had officially granted Elena permanent foster custody of Noa, with full provisions from his recovered trust fund designated exclusively for his education, health, and future well-being.
A knock at the front door broke the tranquil afternoon. Elena wiped her hands on her apron and opened the door to find Detective Marcus standing on the porch, holding a large cardboard box filled with legal paperwork and final case closure documents.
"Afternoon, Elena," Marcus greeted with a warm smile, stepping inside as she gestured him welcome. "Thought I’d drop off the final state custody transfer papers and personally congratulate you both."
Noa looked up from his coloring book, recognizing the detective immediately. A bright, genuine smile spread across the boy's face—a smile entirely devoid of fear or hesitation. "Hi, Mr. Marcus!" Noa called out cheerfully, holding up his drawing of a bright yellow sun over a green meadow. "Look what I drew!"
Marcus walked over, inspecting the drawing with genuine admiration. "That’s exceptional, Noa. Looks like you’ve got quite an artistic streak. Keep practicing, and you might just outdraw the pros."
The detective looked up at Elena, his expression softening as he took in the domestic peace that filled the apartment. "The trial prep is finished. Arthur’s cooperation has solidified the prosecution's case to the point where Julianna's defense attorneys have practically abandoned her. They’ll both be spending decades behind bars. No one will ever be able to hurt him again."
"Thank you, Marcus," Elena said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "For believing me that night. For risking everything to walk into that hallway."

"I just did my job," Marcus replied modestly, tipping his hat. "The real hero is right here." He patted Noa gently on the shoulder before turning toward the door. "I'll let you two get back to lunch. Call me if you ever need anything at all."
