Chapter 11

The morning sun filtered through the reinforced glass of the hospital window, casting warm, golden rays across Noa’s bed. The boy woke up slowly, blinking against the bright morning light without the immediate, crushing panic that usually accompanied his waking moments in the dark wall compartment. He turned his head and saw Elena sitting right where she had been all night, reading a book by the bedside. A small, tentative smile touched Noa’s pale lips, a sight that made Elena’s heart swell with profound relief.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," Elena said gently, laying her book aside and reaching out to brush a stray lock of light brown hair from his forehead. "How are you feeling today?"
"Hungry," Noa admitted softly, his voice stronger than it had been the night before. "And my legs feel a little funny."
Elena laughed, a warm, genuine sound that chased away the lingering shadows of the night. "That’s because you’re finally going to eat real food, not just whatever scraps were smuggled to you. The nurses are bringing up a proper breakfast right now—pancakes, fruit, and warm milk."
A nurse entered the room moments later pushing a small cart laden with nourishing food. Noa’s eyes widened at the sight of the warm pancakes, and for the first time since Elena had discovered him in the wall, he sat up entirely unassisted, eagerly reaching for a fork. Watching him eat with genuine appetite brought tears of joy to Elena’s eyes. The transformation from a terrified, starving captive to a recovering child reminded her of the resilience of the human spirit.
Later that morning, Detective Marcus returned accompanied by a pair of state child protective services caseworkers. Sarah Jenkins, a compassionate woman with kind eyes and a warm demeanor, introduced herself to Noa and explained her role in ensuring his safety moving forward. She sat gently on the edge of the bed, speaking to the boy in soft, reassuring tones while asking him a few necessary questions about his life in the Vance mansion.
Noa answered haltingly at first, recounting fragments of his confinement—the darkness, the cold, the strict rules Julianna enforced whenever visitors arrived. He spoke without crying, his restrained emotions reflecting a maturity forced upon him far too early in life. Sarah listened with deep empathy, taking careful notes before closing her clipboard and looking directly at Elena.
"The court has already granted emergency protective custody," Sarah told Elena quietly. "The Vance estate has been seized by the state pending criminal proceedings. Noa will need a safe, stable environment during his recovery—a temporary foster placement while we sort out his permanent guardianship arrangements through the probate court."
Elena didn't hesitate for a single second. "I want to foster him. If the court allows, I want to take care of him."

Sarah smiled warmly, exchanging a knowing glance with Marcus. "Given your dedication and the bond you've already established, Ms. Vargas, we will support your petition every step of the way."
