Chapter 4

The beam of the handheld searchlight cut through the dense underbrush like a physical blade, sweeping just inches away from where Elena crouched behind the massive oak tree. The sharp smell of pine needles and damp earth filled her lungs as she tried to regulate her breathing, terrified that the frantic pounding of her heart might give away her position. Arthur was methodical, his heavy footsteps crunching heavily against the fallen leaves as he systematically searched the perimeter where the manicured lawns met the untamed forest.
Elena knew she could not outrun him in the dark while wearing her restrictive maid’s uniform and flat shoes. Her calf muscles throbbed from the sudden exertion, and a long scratch on her left cheek stung from the cold night air. Peering cautiously around the rough bark of the tree, she saw the silhouette of Arthur’s tall frame holding a high-powered tactical flashlight. He was scanning the darkness, muttering curses under his breath. The threat in his demeanor was unmistakable; he was no longer just a wealthy socialite protecting a secret, but a desperate man backed into a corner with everything to lose.
Quietly, Elena slipped off her black uniform shoes, wincing as the cold, damp earth pressed against her nylon-clad feet. The silence afforded by the bare soles was her only advantage. Moving with extreme caution, she began to crawl deeper into the thicket, away from the driveway and toward the old stone perimeter wall that separated the estate from the neighboring public park. If she could scale that wall, she would find a footpath leading directly to the old town district where public telephones and local diners remained open late.
Back at the mansion, Julianna paced the length of the grand hallway, her silk gown whispering against the floorboards. She stopped in front of the hidden wall compartment, pressing her ear against the polished wood. Inside, Noa had quieted down, his earlier screams reduced to exhausted, intermittent sniffles. The silence inside the wall unnerved her more than his crying. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key, inserting it into the disguised keyhole hidden within the decorative molding. With a sharp turn, the internal lock disengaged, but she did not open the panel.
"Listen to me, boy," Julianna murmured coldly through the wood, her voice dripping with venom. "Your little friend Elena cannot save you. She is running through the dark right now, and Arthur will catch her. When he brings her back, you will both learn what happens to those who betray this family."
Inside the compartment, Noa curled into a tighter ball, pulling his dirty grey sleeves over his hands to ward off the chill. The threat registered in his young mind with terrifying clarity. He had lived in the shadow of Julianna’s cruelty for as long as he could remember, a forgotten heir whose existence threatened her illegitimate control over the family fortune. Every time visitors came to the estate, he was banished to the dark cavity behind the wall, fed scraps, and treated like a phantom. But this time felt different; Elena had seen him. Hope, fragile and flickering, refused to die entirely in his chest.

Out in the woods, Elena reached the base of the old stone wall. It stood nearly eight feet high, covered in thick, tangled ivy that offered numerous handholds if one was willing to risk torn skin and unstable footing. Hearing the distant snap of a twig and the sweep of Arthur’s flashlight beam drawing closer, she wasted no time. Grasping the thick vines, she hauled herself upward, her muscles straining against the vertical ascent. She reached the top, hoisted herself over the weathered stone, and dropped heavily onto the soft grass of the public park on the other side.
