The autumn leaves outside swirled in the crisp afternoon breeze, painting the neighborhood streets in vibrant shades of amber and gold. Inside the cozy living room, Noa sat curled up on the soft fabric sofa, engrossed in an adventure storybook while Elena read quietly in the armchair across from him. The lingering silences and sudden flinches that had characterized his first weeks out of the wall compartment had gradually disappeared, replaced by the natural, carefree laughter typical of an eight-year-old boy discovering the wonders of the world for the very first time.
Noa paused, looking up from his book as a stray beam of golden sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. He remembered the darkness of the hidden compartment, the suffocating air, and the terror of hearing Julianna’s cold footsteps approaching in the hallway. Yet, those memories felt increasingly distant, like a bad dream experienced by someone else a lifetime ago. He looked over at Elena, who glanced up from her book and offered him a reassuring, loving smile.
"Elena?" Noa asked softly, bookmarking his page and closing the cover.
"Yes, sweetheart?" she replied, setting her book aside and leaning forward.
"Are we ever going back to that big house?" he asked, a tiny trace of lingering childhood uncertainty echoing in his voice.
