Chapter 7

The air in the luxury hallway grew thick with tension, heavy enough to choke. Arthur raised his hands slowly, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he stared at the dark steel of Marcus’s service weapon. His immaculate tuxedo bow tie was crooked, revealing the raw panic beneath his polished exterior. Julianna, on the other hand, remained disturbingly calm. She casually slipped the heavy brass key into her pocket, her manicured fingers brushing the expensive diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.
"Detective Marcus, isn't it?" Julianna purred, her voice dripping with condescending amusement. "You burst into a private residence in the middle of the night without a warrant, threatening respectable citizens with a firearm. I imagine your superiors at the precinct will find your behavior rather difficult to justify by morning."
Marcus kept his aim steady, his eyes locked onto Julianna’s cold blue gaze. He had seen corrupt wealth hide behind legal loopholes and intimidation tactics a thousand times before, but the chilling lack of remorse in her demeanor crossed a line that terrified him. "Put your hands where I can see them, Mrs. Vance. We received a credible report of child endangerment and unlawful imprisonment. Step away from the wall panel right now."
Elena stepped out from behind the detective, her dark eyes blazing with righteous fury. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Julianna. "He's in there! Open the compartment right now, you monster! You've starved him, you've tortured him, and I won't let you hurt him another minute!"
Arthur flinched at Elena’s voice, shifting his weight nervously from foot to foot. "She’s an unhinged former employee, Officer," Arthur babbled, his voice rising in pitch. "She was fired for erratic behavior and trespassing. She fabricated this entire story out of spite because her contract was terminated!"
"Liar!" Elena shouted, taking a step forward before Marcus gently raised his left arm to hold her back.
Before Marcus could issue another command, a heavy metallic thud echoed from deep within the wall compartment, followed by a weak, muffled cough. Noa was still inside, fighting for air in the dwindling oxygen of the narrow cavity. The sound pierced the psychological standoff like a physical blow. Julianna’s calm facade flickered for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening as she realized time had run out for their deception.
"You're protecting monsters," Marcus said coldly to Arthur, his finger resting lightly on the trigger guard. "Step away from the panel, or I will charge you both with obstruction, kidnapping, and felony child abuse right here and now."

Realizing the game was up, Arthur collapsed against the mahogany console table, his knees buckling under the sheer weight of their crumbling facade. He buried his face in his hands, defeated. But Julianna’s eyes flashed with a final, desperate defiance. Instead of complying, she spun toward the hidden compartment, inserted the brass key into the lock with lightning speed, and threw the heavy wooden panel wide open.
