Chapter 6

The unmarked sedan slipped through the wrought-iron service gates of the Vance estate with its headlights extinguished, relying solely on the pale moonlight filtering through the heavy canopy of ancient oak trees. Marcus parked the vehicle deep within the dense shadows of the overgrown conservatory, cutting the engine with a silent flick of his wrist. In the passenger seat, Elena adjusted her torn white apron over her soiled black uniform, her breath coming in shallow, controlled bursts. She reached down, pulling on a pair of heavy leather work gloves she had salvaged from the diner’s utility closet to protect her bare feet during the upcoming infiltration.
"Stay close behind me," Marcus murmured, pulling his service weapon from its leather holster and checking the magazine with a practiced, muted click. "Once we're inside, we move fast. If we encounter Arthur or Julianna, let me do the talking. Do not escalate unless physical force is applied."
Elena nodded, her heart hammering against her ribs. She knew the layout of the mansion better than anyone; every creaking floorboard, every blind spot in the security camera coverage, and every hidden passageway utilized by domestic staff for decades. She led Marcus toward the heavy oak conservatory door, which remained unlocked just as she suspected, left ajar by caterers who had departed hours earlier through the main gates.
They slipped inside into the humid, fragrant air of the indoor greenhouse. Rows of exotic orchids and towering palms cast monstrous, writhing shadows across the stone floor as they navigated toward the main residential corridor. The silence inside the mansion was heavy, oppressive, and entirely unnatural for a home that had hosted a grand gala only hours prior. It was the silence of a tomb, masking the sinister operations unfolding behind closed doors.
As they approached the luxury hallway where the hidden wall compartment was located, the low murmur of urgent voices reached their ears. Marcus raised a hand, signaling Elena to halt. They pressed themselves flat against the ornate wainscoting just around the corner, straining to listen.
"I tell you, the transport won't arrive for another hour!" Arthur’s voice hissed, tight with panic. "If Elena has already contacted the authorities, we don't have an hour! We need to get him out of the wall right now and into the trunk of the sedan!"
"Stop panicking, Arthur!" Julianna snapped back, her voice dripping with cold authority. "You are unraveling like a cheap sweater. The boy goes nowhere until I unlock the inner security latch. Unlock the panel properly or you'll jam the pneumatic mechanism again."
Elena exchanged a grim glance with Marcus. The detective’s jaw tightened. He stepped around the corner, his service weapon raised and held at a low, ready position, his voice cutting through the opulent hallway like a gunshot.
"Vance family, federal and local authorities. Step away from the wall with your hands visible!"

Arthur spun around, his face turning an ash-gray color as he stared down the barrel of Marcus’s gun. Julianna, however, did not flinch. She stood tall beside the hidden compartment, her dark blue evening gown gleaming under the crystal sconces, her champagne glass replaced by the heavy brass key she had been holding. A dangerous, placid smile played across her lips as she looked at Marcus, completely unfazed by the intrusion of the law.
