Chapter 1: The Hollow Wall**

The crystal champagne flute shattered across the polished mahogany floor, sending shards and sparkling wine splashing against tailored trousers and designer heels. But no one among the elite guests at the Sterling Annual Gala looked down. Every gaze was locked onto the jagged, cavernous hole hidden behind the multi-million-dollar oil portrait.

Inside the dark cavity between the framing studs, eight-year-old Ethan blinked against the blinding chandeliers. His pale face was smudged with plaster dust and dried tear tracks. His small hands clutched the rough two-by-four timber like a lifeline.

"Emma... please help me out," Ethan whimpered, his voice barely carrying over the stifled gasps echoing through the corridor.

Julian Sterling fell to his knees in his tuxedo, completely disregarding the broken glass biting into his knees. His knuckles turned white as he grabbed the edges of the jagged drywall. "Ethan! My God, Ethan!"

Behind him, Victoria Sterling stood paralyzed in her strapless black gown. Her fingers dug into the diamond necklace circling her throat until her skin turned red. Her face had drained of all color, her lips trembling as she stared at the man she called her husband.

"Julian..." Victoria’s voice cracked, cutting through the heavy silence of the grand hallway. "You told me you dropped him off at the boarding academy in Maine two weeks ago. You swore you watched him walk through the gates!"

A murmur rippled through the assembled high-society crowd—city council members, tech billionaires, and judges—all watching the facade of Highpoint Manor violently crumble in real-time.

Emma, still wearing her bright yellow cleaning gloves, moved instinctively. Pushing past the paralyzing shock that gripped the wealthy onlookers, she knelt beside the cavity, extending a steady, warm hand into the darkness. "I’ve got you, sweetheart. Don't look at the crowd. Just look at me."

Ethan’s tiny, trembling fingers reached out, his grip surprisingly desperate for someone who looked so frail. But as Emma pulled him slightly forward, the boy let out a sharp cry of agony.

"I can't," Ethan sobbed, his chest heaving beneath his dusty dress shirt. "My leg... he tied it to the iron pipe inside."

A collective gasp sucked the air out of the room. Emma froze, her eyes snapping up to Julian Sterling.

Julian was shaking violently, his polished aristocratic composure disintegrating into raw, unadulterated panic. "It wasn't me, Victoria! I swear on my life, I didn't do this!"

"Then who did, Julian?!" Victoria screamed, tears finally spilling over her mascara. "Who puts a child inside a wall?!"

From deep inside the shadows behind Ethan, a soft, rhythmic ticking sound began to resonate through the hollow walls.
