Chapter 8: The Confession**

Across town at the county justice facility, Richard Sterling sat in an interrogation room across from Sheriff Miller and the district attorney. Stripped of his tailored suits and platinum watch, Richard looked hollow, his arrogant veneer completely shattered under the weight of undeniable evidence.

"The paper trail is airtight, Richard," Sheriff Miller said, tossing a folder onto the metal table. "Vance gave us full access to your encrypted messaging history. You promised him two million dollars once Julian withdrew from the judicial race and transferred power of attorney over the family trust."

Richard stared at his cuffed hands, his voice flat and bitter. "Julian had everything. He was the golden boy. Top of his law school class, favorite of our father, married to the society sweetheart, on track for the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, I ran the family firm for ten years and barely got a nod of approval."

"So you decided to destroy an eight-year-old child?" the district attorney asked coldly.

"I didn't want him hurt!" Richard snapped, his eyes flashing with desperate defensiveness. "The plan was simple. Ethan would stay hidden for two weeks until Julian collapsed under the stress and stepped down. Vance was supposed to release Ethan at an out-of-state shelter once the trust was reorganized. Vance was the one who brought him back to the manor walls because the roadblocks made transport too risky!"

"You treated your own blood like a bargaining chip," Miller said, shaking his head with disgust. "You locked him in a dark, rat-infested utility shaft during a thunderstorm while you were downstairs drinking champagne."

Richard looked away, the weight of his irredeemable choices finally crushing his spirit. "Is Ethan... is he going to be okay?"

Miller stood up and gathered his files, looking down at the broken man with cold finality. "No thanks to you, Richard. Ethan will heal. But you will spend the next twenty years behind concrete walls of your own."

As the heavy iron door slammed shut, Richard was left alone with the deafening silence of his consequences.
