Chapter 4: The Manor's Deepest Secret**

Within ten minutes, the wail of sirens pierced the quiet evening as five county sheriff cruisers and an ambulance roared up the long, winding driveway of Highpoint Manor. Guests were quickly escorted out to the courtyard, their hushed whispers filling the night air as flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand neoclassical facade.
Paramedics gently took Ethan, wrapping him in an insulated foil blanket and setting up an IV line right in the center of the foyer. The boy was severely dehydrated, running a high fever, but miraculously had no broken bones.
Sheriff Arthur Miller, a grizzled veteran with decades of service in the county, stood over Julian and Victoria in the private study, his expression grim.
"We found Vance's SUV abandoned near the north gate," Miller said, jotting notes in his ledger. "He cut through the woods toward the state highway. State troopers have set up roadblocks within a twenty-mile radius. We will find him."
Julian sat on the leather sofa, his face pale, hands wrapped in clean gauze provided by the paramedics. "Why would Marcus do this? He’s worked for my family for twelve years. He watched Ethan grow up."
"Because Marcus wasn't acting alone, Mr. Sterling," Emma said quietly from the doorway.
The sheriff, Julian, and Victoria all turned to look at the young maid. Emma was still holding the gilded oil painting’s backing paper—a thick canvas backing that had torn free when she moved the painting off the wall.
"What do you have there, Emma?" Victoria asked, her voice raspy and exhausted.
Emma walked forward and laid the thick backing paper across Julian’s mahogany desk. Taped neatly to the reverse side was a manila envelope labeled with a single handwritten phrase: *The Cost of Silence.*
Inside were bank transfer receipts, certified property deeds, and recorded audio transcriptions dating back six months.
Julian’s eyes widened as he scanned the first document. "These are wire transfers from my brother’s investment firm. Hundreds of thousands of dollars paid directly to Vance’s offshore account."
Victoria covered her mouth with both hands. "Richard? Richard did this to his own nephew?"

"Not just to Ethan," Emma said softly, pointing to a highlighted paragraph on the financial audit sheet. "Richard wasn't just hiding Ethan. He was framing Mr. Sterling for child neglect and embezzlement. If Julian was ruined by scandal, the entire Sterling family trust would default entirely to Richard."
