Chapter 13: The Final Trial**

The winter brought the commencement of the state trial against Richard Sterling and Marcus Vance. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with reporters, citizens, and legal scholars from across the country.
When Julian took the witness stand, he didn't look at the defense table with hatred or vengeance. When asked by the prosecutor to describe the events of that fateful night, Julian spoke with calm, undeniable clarity.
"My brother committed a heinous crime out of jealousy and greed," Julian testified, his voice carrying through the hushed courtroom. "He used an innocent boy as a weapon in a game of vanity. But the environment that allowed him to believe he could get away with it was created by all of us—by an obsession with appearance over substance, with reputation over human life."
Richard kept his head bowed, unable to meet his brother’s steady, forgiving, yet unyielding gaze.
When the verdict was delivered, Richard Sterling was sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of early parole for aggravated kidnapping, child endangerment, and wire fraud. Marcus Vance received a twenty-five-year sentence for his direct role in the abduction and conspiracy.
As the bailiffs led Richard away in handcuffs, Julian stood in the gallery. Richard paused for a brief moment, looking at Julian with hollow eyes.
"I won't visit you out of anger, Richard," Julian said quietly as his brother passed by. "I will visit you so that one day, you can understand that what you tried to steal from me was never worth having in the first place."

Richard swallowed hard, nodding faintly before disappearing through the heavy security doors into the holding cell.
