Chapter 5: The Web Unravels**

The revelation sent shockwaves through the room. Richard Sterling was Julian’s younger brother, the charismatic managing partner of the family's investment empire. To the public, he was the doting uncle and the supportive brother standing behind Julian’s judicial campaign.

"Two weeks ago," Julian murmured, piecing together the nightmare, "Richard offered to drive Ethan to Maine for his summer camp orientation. He texted me photos of Ethan standing in front of the camp lodge. He said Ethan was settling in wonderfully."

"The photos were staged in the garden pavilion out back," Emma explained, showing a small camera memory card found inside the envelope. "Vance kept Ethan locked inside the old servants' quarters between the walls. They were waiting for tonight—the night of the biggest gala—to leak an anonymous tip to the press that Julian had abandoned his sick son."

Julian slammed his fist onto the desk, his voice shaking with fury. "Where is Richard now?"

Sheriff Miller’s radio squawked before anyone could answer. The sheriff brought the transceiver to his mouth. "Miller here. Go ahead."

"Sheriff, we intercepted a black sedan attempting to bypass the perimeter checkpoint on County Road 9," the deputy’s voice crackled over the speaker. "Two suspects detained. Marcus Vance and Richard Sterling."

Julian stood up immediately, but Victoria placed a gentle, grounding hand on his arm. "Let the law handle them, Julian. Our only job tonight is our son."

Julian looked at his wife, the anger in his eyes dissolving into pure, gut-wrenching regret. For months, he had been consumed by ambition, late-night campaign meetings, and high-society fundraisers. He had trusted his brother blindly while delegating the care of his home and his son to assistants and staff.

He walked out of the study and into the foyer, where Ethan sat on the gurney, clutching a warm mug of cocoa the paramedics had given him.

Julian knelt down so his eyes were level with his son’s. "Ethan."

The boy looked at him hesitantly, still bearing the emotional scars of being lied to for two weeks in the dark.

"You are never, ever going to be hidden away again," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I failed you because I wasn't paying attention to what truly mattered. But I swear to you, from this second on, nothing in this world is more important than being your father."

Ethan reached out his small, bruised hand and touched his father’s tear-stained cheek. "I knew you’d find me, Daddy. Emma heard me, but you broke the wall."
