BURIED IN PLAIN SIGHT

A year to the day after Ethan was rescued from the wall, the Sterling family and the staff of the Ethan Sterling Foundation gathered in the central courtyard of Highpoint Manor.

Where the old wall had once stood in the main hallway, a magnificent stained-glass skylight had been installed overhead, allowing natural golden light to wash over the entire center of the home.

On the wall where the dark antique oil painting once hung, there was now a large, vibrant collaborative mural painted by dozens of children who had passed through the shelter over the past year. In bold, joyful colors, it depicted a great oak tree with branches extending in all directions, providing shade and nests for birds of every kind.

At the base of the mural was an inscribed brass plaque containing simple, powerful words chosen by Ethan himself:

> *"The walls we build to hide our truth will only keep out the light. Tear them down, and let love find you."*

Sheriff Arthur Miller, now retired and serving as a security consultant for the foundation, clinked his glass of sparkling cider against Emma’s. "You changed this family, young lady. You changed this whole county."

"They changed themselves," Emma replied, watching Julian toss Ethan into the air as the boy giggled with pure joy. "They just needed a reminder that the most precious things in life don't sparkle under chandeliers—they breathe right next to us."

Victoria walked over to Emma, handing her a framed diploma. Emma had graduated that very morning at the top of her class with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work.

"For our director," Victoria said, beaming with pride. "Your office wall is waiting."
