Chapter 7: Debts of Gratitude**

Emma walked into the private room, setting the bakery bag on the small table. Victoria immediately stood up, crossing the room to embrace the young woman tightly.

"If you hadn't been cleaning that wall... if you hadn't listened to the faint scratching behind the portrait..." Victoria's voice broke, tears gathering in her eyes. "I would have gone another two weeks believing my child was at camp. I would have lost him forever."

"I was just doing my job, Mrs. Sterling," Emma replied with humble sincerity. "I noticed the painting hung slightly crooked yesterday afternoon. When I straightened it, I heard a tiny sneeze inside the wall. At first, I thought it was mice. But then I heard a small whisper say my name."

Julian stepped closer, extending his hand. When Emma took it, Julian enclosed her hand with both of his in deep reverence. "You didn't just do your job, Emma. You had the courage to shout out in front of two hundred influential people and stop a gala to save my boy. You exposed a conspiracy that could have cost you your life."

"Ethan is a sweet boy," Emma said simply. "Nobody deserves to be treated like an inconvenience. Especially not a child."

Emma had worked at Highpoint Manor for only eight months to pay for her younger sister’s nursing tuition and her own college education in social work. She came from a working-class background where family was the only safety net they had. Seeing a child neglected in the midst of boundless wealth had broken her heart long before she discovered the wall.

Julian looked at Emma with renewed respect. "I learned this morning that Richard had threatened to fire you three days ago because you were 'asking too many questions' about the storage areas."

"He told me to mind my business," Emma admitted. "That’s when I knew something was wrong. So I stayed late last night on purpose."

Victoria wiped her eyes, looking at Julian with clear resolve. "We need to make things right. Not just with Ethan, but with the world we’ve built around ourselves."

Julian nodded firmly. "It starts today."
