Chapter 8: Reunion

Room 204 was bathed in the soft, warm light of the afternoon sun filtering through lace curtains. The room smelled faintly of lavender and fresh linen. On the medical bed lay Clara Vance, pale and thin, her breathing quiet and slow.
Leo stood at the doorway, his heart pounding against his ribs. He felt Arthur’s hand gently rest on his back, giving him the courage to take the first step.
""Mom?"" Leo whispered.
The woman on the bed stirred slowly. Her eyelashes fluttered open, revealing the same hopeful hazel eyes that Leo possessed. When her eyes adjusted to the light and fell upon the boy standing at her bedside, tears immediately overflowed down her pale cheeks.
""Leo...?"" she breathed, her voice raspy. ""My baby...""
Leo ran to the bed, climbing onto the mattress and wrapping his arms tightly around her neck. ""I found the key, Mom! I found Mr. Arthur! We're safe!""

Arthur walked into the room carrying two-year-old Lily. When Clara saw her baby girl clean, healthy, and smiling, she squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing with pure gratitude. Arthur gently set Lily down on the edge of the bed, where she immediately snuggled into her mother's chest, repeating, ""Mommy! Mommy!""
Arthur stood back near the doorway, watching the mother reunited with her children. For the first time in twenty years, the cold void in Arthur’s heart felt completely healed, filled with a profound sense of purpose.
