Chapter 6: A Trail of Courage

Arthur spent the entire night in his private study with his legal team and digital forensic experts. By dawn, the contents of the flash drive revealed the full extent of Richard Sterling’s corporate fraud, including the illegal foreclosure of community housing and systemic intimidation tactics used against low-income families—including Clara.

More importantly, buried within the financial logs was an anonymous record of a specialized medical facility in upstate New York, funded under a shell company. Clara hadn't passed away; she had been moved to a private hospice care center, kept isolated under false patient records to prevent her from speaking out.

Arthur walked into the kitchen where Leo was helping Mrs. Higgins set the breakfast table.

""Leo,"" Arthur said softly.

The boy turned around, holding a tray of silverware.

""We found your mother.""

Leo dropped the silver spoons onto the table with a soft clatter. His eyes filled with sudden, overwhelming light. ""Is she... is she alive?""

""She is,"" Arthur smiled, feeling a warmth in his chest he hadn't experienced in decades. ""She's in a hospital two hours north of the city. Sterling kept her hidden, but we know where she is now. Federal agents are already moving in to secure her safety, and I have a private medical transport ready.""

Leo burst into tears—not of fear, but of sheer, unadulterated relief. He threw his arms around Arthur’s waist, burying his face into the older man's suit. Arthur held the boy tightly, tears pricking his own eyes as he patted Leo's back.

""We're going to get her back, son,"" Arthur whispered. ""I promise.""
