Chapter 5: The Silver Locket

By mid-week, snow began to fall over New York City, dusting the brownstone’s windows in brilliant white patterns. Arthur arranged for a private tutor and a doctor to visit the house discreetly, ensuring the children were healthy and catching up on their education.
One afternoon, while Lily was taking a nap, Leo walked into Arthur’s library holding a small brass box he had kept hidden inside the lining of his oversized jacket.
""You've been very kind to us, Mr. Arthur,"" Leo said quietly, placing the box on the mahogany desk. ""My mom told me that if I ever found someone who treated us like human beings, I should show them this.""
Arthur looked at the battered brass box. ""Leo, this is yours. You don't owe me anything.""
""I know,"" Leo replied softly. ""But my mom said true friends are rarer than gold.""
With delicate fingers, Leo unlocked the box using a tiny silver key that hung around his neck under his shirt. Inside lay a silver locket shaped like a maple leaf and a small USB flash drive tucked into velvet padding.
Arthur’s breath hitched. The silver key. Clara hadn't given the kids the evidence directly to put them in danger; she had disguised it as a keepsake, trusting Leo’s protective instincts to keep it hidden until he found someone worthy of trust.
Arthur looked at the boy with profound respect. ""Your mother was a remarkably brave woman, Leo. And so are you.""

""Can you help her, Mr. Arthur?"" Leo asked, his voice cracking for the first time, exposing the fragile child beneath the brave older brother. ""The doctors said she was very sick... but I know she's waiting for us.""
Arthur touched the boy’s head gently. ""I will do everything in my power to find out where she is, Leo. I give you my word.""
