Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

Later that evening, after Lily was tucked into a massive king-sized bed upstairs, Arthur found Leo sitting on the carpet by the fireplace, staring into the flames.

""You aren't sleepy?"" Arthur asked, pulling up an armchair.

Leo shook his head, reaching into his pocket to touch something small and delicate. ""I have to keep guard. If someone comes to take her...""

""No one is going to take her, Leo,"" Arthur promised, his tone ringing with absolute sincerity. ""You are under my roof now. No harm will reach you here.""

Leo hesitated, then slowly pulled his hands from his pocket. He held out an old, crumpled piece of paper and a faded photograph. ""We were staying at a shelter until last week. My mom... she was very sick. Before the ambulance took her away, she told me to find a place called The Harbor. But we got lost.""

Arthur gently took the paper. It was a handwritten note from a woman whose handwriting trembled toward the end: “Leo, my brave boy. Take Lily and run to the coast. Look for the silver key. Don’t trust the men in gray.”

Arthur’s heart sank as he recognized the phrasing. ""The men in gray..."" he muttered under his breath. It was a euphemism used in the darker corners of the city's corporate underworld—creditors and enforcers working for Arthur’s former business rival, Richard Sterling.

Looking down at the photo, Arthur saw a young woman with radiant eyes holding a newborn baby. His eyes widened slightly as he recognized her face. ""Your mother... her name was Clara?""

Leo looked up, startled. ""How do you know my mom?""

Arthur closed his eyes as a wave of memory washed over him. Clara had been his chief accountant seven years ago before she abruptly vanished after discovering financial fraud within Sterling's empire. Arthur had spent years searching for her, unaware that she had been hiding in plain sight, protecting her children from retaliation.
