Chapter 10: Learning to Trust

The following weeks brought a complete transformation to the Vance estate.
The cold, museum-like mansion was suddenly filled with the sound of children's laughter. Arthur hired the best private tutors and pediatric trauma specialists to help the siblings heal. Yet, despite the luxury, Leo remained vigilant, often saving bread rolls in his pockets during dinner.
One evening, Arthur sat beside Leo in the courtyard garden.
"You don't need to hoard food, Leo," Arthur said gently, noticing the napkin full of rolls under the boy's jacket. "The kitchen is always open."
Leo looked down, ashamed. "At the shelter, if you didn't hide breakfast, bigger kids took it. I was always scared Mia wouldn't eat."
Arthur placed a weathered hand over Leo's small fingers. "Look at me, Leo. Your job as the sole protector is over. You're eight years old. Your only job now is to read books, play in the grass, and grow up. Let me carry the rest."
