Chapter 1: The Frozen Moment

The bustling morning buzz inside *La Maison Bakery* died instantly. Arthur Vance—real estate titan, philanthropist, and one of the most guarded men in Chicago—felt the world tilt on its axis.

He stared down at the worn photograph in the boy's trembling hands. The paper was creased, the edges scorched and brittle, but the image was unmistakable: a younger Arthur, thirty years prior, proudly cradling his newborn daughter, Clara.

"Where did you get this?" Arthur’s voice lost its boardroom steel, replaced by a raw tremor.

The eight-year-old boy, Leo, tightened his grip on his five-year-old sister, Mia. "My mama gave it to me before the fire," Leo whispered, wiping soot from his cheek. "She said if we ever lost everything, we had to find the man with the silver ring."

Arthur’s gaze dropped to the engraved platinum band on his right hand. Clara had designed it for his fiftieth birthday before walking out of his life over a bitter family feud.

"Your mother... where is Clara?"

Leo looked down at his scuffed boots, tears carving clean trails through the dirt on his face. "She didn't make it out of the shelter, mister."
