Chapter 8: Unbroken Chain

The mercenaries began scattering into the harbor shadows as federal tactical units breached the perimeter gates with flashbangs and megaphones. But Victor wasn't running toward an escape boat; he was sprinting toward the manual release lever of the crane holding Container 404 suspended fifty feet in the air above the icy ocean.
"If I don't get the cargo, nobody does!" Victor screamed into the howling wind, his face twisted with manic desperation.
"Julian, stay down!" Adrian yelled.
Adrian sprinted across the wet concrete, dodging stray ricochets and oil slicks. He grabbed the maintenance ladder of the crane tower, climbing furiously through the torrential downpour. His muscles burned, but every rung he grabbed was fueled by the memory of Mia’s terrified eyes and the hundreds of innocent lives hanging in the balance.
