BENEATH THE MARBLE FLOOR / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Breach of Silence

The click of Victor’s dress shoes against the polished marble echoed through the grand hallway like the steady ticking of a detonator. Adrian didn't stand up immediately. He stayed crouched over the dark crawlspace, feeling the cold air rise against his chest while his little niece, Mia, clung trembling to the fabric of his tailored trouser leg. Elena’s hand was still extended from the shadows, her trembling fingers pressing the metal flash drive into his palm.

"You shouldn’t have come home early, Adrian," Victor said softly, pausing ten paces away. His two bodyguards fanned out, blocking the arched exit to the courtyard. The ruby on Victor’s finger caught the afternoon sun, gleaming like fresh blood. "Some truths are meant to stay buried. Literally."

Adrian tucked the USB drive into his inner pocket with a swift, fluid motion, then gently nudged Mia behind his back. "Where is Julian, Victor?"

Victor gave a patronizing smile, adjusting his silk tie. "Julian chose family loyalty over profit. A fatal romanticism in our line of work. But I’m a generous man. Step away from the floorboards, walk out that front door, and you might still have a life to salvage."

Adrian’s breath steadied. He saw the subtle twitch in the bodyguard’s right hand—a signal to draw. With explosive precision, Adrian kicked the loose marble slab directly toward the nearest man's shin. The guard stumbled with a crack of bone, and Adrian lunged forward, tackling Victor against the mahogany console table. Crystal shattered across the floor. Grabbing Mia with his free arm, Adrian fired a concealed taser directly into the second guard's chest, threw open the service staircase door, and locked the steel deadbolt behind them.
