Chapter 9: The Grand Gala Invitation

The Metropolitan Heritage Gala was the most prestigious event of the year, bringing together artists, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists. This year’s theme was “Roots of Home,” and the organizing committee had commissioned Kristen and Arthur’s shop to create the main architectural display in the grand ballroom.

On the night of the event, the ballroom was breathtaking. In the center stood a magnificent, life-sized wooden tree carved from reclaimed barn wood, decorated with dozens of uniquely crafted, glowing wooden birdhouses—each representing hope, family, and community resilience.

Kristen stepped into the hall wearing a classic, elegant navy dress, her hair styled gracefully. Beside her walked Arthur in a sharp suit, and the twins, dressed in matching formal attire, looking proud and confident.

Aunt Diane arrived shortly after, clad in expensive designer clothes and heavy diamond jewelry. She had expected to be the center of attention as usual. However, as guests entered, everyone gathered around the central wooden monument, admiring the masterwork created by Kristen and her team.

""It’s breathtaking,"" Mayor Roberts announced to the crowd, raising his glass. ""This masterpiece reminds us all that true wealth lies in the homes we build and the love we harbor.""

Diane watched from the edge of the crowd, feeling an unsettling isolation amidst the luxury she had spent her life clinging to.
