Chapter 3: A Chance Encounter

A few weeks later, on a crisp Saturday morning, the local community center held its annual autumn farmers' market. Kristen took the kids to browse the stalls, allowing Leo to bring his birdhouse along to show his school friend who ran a craft booth.
As Leo stood near a wooden display table holding his birdhouse up to the sunlight, an elderly man with silver hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and sawdust-dusted overalls stopped in his tracks. He was Arthur Vance, a retired master carpenter who owned ""Vance & Sons Fine Woodworking""—a legacy shop in town that had fallen quiet since Arthur's arthritis made heavy crafting difficult.
Arthur adjusted his spectacles and leaned down slightly. ""Well, look at that joinery. Did you build this yourself, young man?""
Leo shrank back slightly behind Kristen, but the pride in his eyes gave him away. ""I painted it blue, and my mom helped me cut the roof angled,"" he said proudly.
Arthur picked up the birdhouse with gentle, weathered hands, inspecting the smooth edges and the sturdy pencil peg. ""You've got an eye for balance, kiddo. And the sanding on these edges shows patience. Most adults don't have this kind of patience.""

Kristen stepped forward, smiling warmly. ""Thank you, sir. He put his heart into it.""
Arthur looked at Kristen, noticing the quiet determination in her eyes and the worn sleeves of her sweater. ""You know... I've been looking for someone to help manage the front floor and organize custom orders at my shop downtown. Someone with an eye for detail. Do you happen to know anyone looking for work?""
