Chapter 4: The Apprentice's Spark
Working at Vance Fine Woodworking changed everything. Kristen proved to be an exceptionally organized manager, restoring order to Arthur's dusty front showroom and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that attracted new clients. In return, Arthur opened his workshop doors to Leo and Maya after school.
While Maya sat at a small desk drawing designs for decorative bird feeders, Arthur taught Leo the fundamentals of woodworking. He showed him how to choose the right grain of oak and pine, how to handle a hand plane safely, and how to measure twice and cut once.
""Wood has a story, Leo,"" Arthur explained one afternoon as curl-like shavings spiraled onto the workbench floor. ""If you treat it with respect, it will stand strong against any storm.""
Under Arthur's guidance, Leo’s simple birdhouses transformed into delicate, beautifully crafted miniature homes. Kristen began placing a few of Leo’s birdhouses in the front display window of the shop, labeled simply: “Built with Love by Leo & Family.”
