Chapter 11: The Unmasking

Before Diane could utter another bitter remark, Uncle Richard stepped out from the crowd. He stood firmly beside Kristen, facing his sister directly in front of the entire high-society gathering.

""Enough, Diane,"" Richard said loudly, his voice filled with newfound conviction. ""For decades, you have used your wealth to dictate who belongs and who doesn't. You turned Kristen and her young children away in the cold because you thought they weren't good enough for your table.""

Gasps rippled through the gathered guests. Diane’s face flushed red with humiliation.

""You tried to diminish them,"" Richard continued, ""but look at them now. They have more grace, warmth, and integrity than you will ever possess. I stayed quiet once, but I will never sit quietly while you disrespect real family again.""

Diane stood frozen, her sharp tongue silenced by the collective disapproving glares of her peers. Realizing her reign of social influence was shattered by her own cruelty, she turned around and walked out of the ballroom, alone in her cold vanity.

The ballroom erupted into warm applause for Kristen, Leo, and Richard.
