Chapter 1: The Cold Rain Outside

The heavy glass doors of the upscale restaurant closed behind Kristen and her children, sealing away the warm, amber glow of a dining room that had rejected them. The autumn air was crisp and unforgiving. Kristen pulled her thin jacket tighter around her shoulders, her vision blurred by tears she desperately tried not to shed in front of her seven-year-old twins.
Beside her, little Maya held onto her mother’s sweater, her curly ginger hair damp from the light drizzle beginning to fall. Leo walked quietly on her other side, his small hands clutching the light blue painted wooden birdhouse he had spent three afternoons perfecting. His small, scuffed shoes clicked against the pavement as they walked toward their old hatchback car.
""Mommy?"" Leo’s voice broke the silence, soft and hesitant. ""Is Aunt Diane mad at me because the paint wasn't dry?""
Kristen stopped near the driver's side door, kneeling down into the cold wet leaves on the sidewalk so she could look into her son’s hazel eyes. She gently took his face in her trembling hands and wiped a stray droplet off his cheek.
""Oh, sweetie, no,"" she said, her voice steadying through sheer maternal willpower. ""Your birdhouse is the most beautiful thing in the world. Aunt Diane just... she forgot what really matters. But I promise you, your hard work means everything.""

Leo looked down at the handmade birdhouse, tracing the hand-drawn bird on its side with his thumb. ""She said we were irritating.""
""You are a blessing, Leo. You and Maya both,"" Kristen whispered, wrapping both children into a tight, warm embrace right there under the streetlamp. ""We don't need a seat at a table where we aren't loved. We'll make our own table.""
