Chapter 12: Richard's Choice

Later that night, as the gala wound down, Uncle Richard walked out onto the terrace where Kristen, Arthur, and the kids were taking in the cool night air.

""I hope I didn't ruin your evening, Kristen,"" Richard said softly, looking humbled.

""You gave us justice, Uncle Richard,"" Kristen replied, offering him a warm, gentle smile. ""Thank you for standing up for my children.""

Richard smiled through a tear in his eye. ""I'm resigning from Diane's estate foundation tomorrow. I want to invest my time and money into something meaningful. I was wondering... if your workshop ever needs a financial backer to build a youth woodworking school... I would be honored to help.""

Arthur slapped Richard on the shoulder with a hearty laugh. ""Well, Richard! If you're willing to sweep sawdust and learn how to use a planer, we might just have a spot for you!""

Leo looked up at his grand-uncle and offered him a small, hand-carved wooden bird keychain from his pocket. ""Here, Uncle Richard. So you don't forget where home is.""

Richard took the small piece of wood, holding it like a precious jewel, tears finally slipping down his face.
