Chapter 8: Crack in the Armor

""Kristen,"" Richard said, his voice trembling slightly. He took a hesitant step forward, eyes scanning the beautiful wooden furniture and delicate birdhouses around the room.

Kristen stood straight, her composure calm and dignified. ""Uncle Richard. What brings you here?""

""I... I came to apologize,"" Richard said, looking down at his polished shoes. ""That night at the restaurant... I should have stood up for you. I should have told Diane she was wrong. I was a coward, Kristen. I let my fear of her authority keep me silent while she hurt you and those innocent kids.""

Leo emerged from the back workshop, wearing a small leather tool apron, holding a piece of sandpaper. He stopped next to his mother, watching Richard cautiously.

Richard looked at the boy, his eyes welling with tears. ""Leo... I remember that birdhouse you made. It was beautiful. I am so sorry I didn't say it that night.""

Kristen gently placed her hand on Leo’s shoulder. She looked at her uncle—not with anger, but with a quiet, grounded strength. ""Apologies don't change the past, Uncle Richard. But I appreciate you coming here to say it. My children learned that night that our worth isn't determined by where we are invited, but by how we treat others.""

Richard nodded, swallows hard. ""You’ve built something incredible here. Far grander than anything in Diane’s house.""
