Chapter 8 - The Bait and the Hook

The silence in the master suite grew heavy, suffocating under the weight of Elena’s words. Clara took a shaky step forward, her bare feet leaving a faint muddy smudge on the edge of the plush white carpet before she caught herself and stopped.
“Bait?” Clara repeated, the word tasting bitter on her tongue. “You let us sleep in your beds, wear your clothes, spend your money... you planned all of this?”
Elena stood up gracefully from her vanity chair, smoothing the folds of her white satin robe with unhurried precision. She walked slowly toward them, her movements fluid and utterly composed, stopping a few feet away. The contrast between Elena’s pristine appearance and their filthy, shivering state was a visual masterpiece of humiliation.
“When I caught Julian going through my private accounts two years ago,” Elena began, her voice dropping into a conversational, almost conversational tone, “I had two choices. I could have had him arrested, thrown into a federal cell where he belonged, and saved myself the trouble.”
Julian tared at her, his jaw tightening. “Then why didn’t you?”
“Because prison is too merciful for a parasite,” Elena replied smoothly, her blue eyes locking onto his with razor-sharp intensity. “I wanted to see how far your ambition would take you if I loosened the leash. I wanted to see how many people you would manipulate, how many lies you would tell, and how quickly you would betray everything we built together.” She glanced briefly at Clara. “And you, my dear Clara, were simply the easiest catalyst I could possibly have chosen. A lonely executive assistant looking for a shortcut to wealth, entirely blind to the fact that you were just a placeholder in someone else’s game.”
Clara gasped, stepping back as if she had been physically struck. “You knew I was ambitious? You encouraged me to get close to him?”
“I engineered it,” Elena corrected softly, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. “Every promotion, every late-night meeting in this house, every secret glance—I scripted all of it. I needed you both to believe you were winning, so that when I finally closed the trap, the fall would be absolute.”
Julian lunged forward, his muscular frame surging with sudden, blind rage, his hands reaching out to grab Elena by the shoulders—

Before his fingers could even graze her satin robe, the walls on either side of the doorway slid shut with blinding speed, dropping a thick grid of reinforced steel bars right between them.
