Chapter 15 - The Empty Horizon

The cargo plane touched down on the sun-baked tarmac of the remote coastal airstrip twenty hours later, the searing tropical heat rushing into the cabin the moment the hydraulic ramp lowered. Julian and Clara stepped out onto the glaring concrete, shielding their eyes against the blinding equatorial sun. Two men in plain gray uniforms stood waiting by an idling Land Cruiser, holding no signs, offering no greetings—just waiting to escort the new arrivals to their designated compound forty miles inland.
Clara clutched her worn coat around her shoulders, her bare feet encased in cheap canvas shoes provided by the flight crew. She looked out at the endless expanse of dry, dusty scrubland stretching toward the distant horizon, realizing with absolute finality that there were no smart-homes here, no grand marble foyers, no security cameras, and no Elena to watch them. They were entirely, utterly alone in a world they had chosen to conquer, only to find themselves completely forgotten.
Julian tossed their single canvas duffel bag into the back of the Land Cruiser. He paused with his hand on the door frame, taking one last look up at the empty sky where the cargo plane was already turning around to make its lonely journey back north.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the heavy brass key he had dug out of the conservatory soil—the fake key Elena had planted to lead him into her trap. He tossed it casually into the dust by the side of the road, watching it disappear beneath the dry earth without a second glance.
“Get in, Clara,” Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of anger, regret, or ambition.
Clara climbed into the passenger seat without a word, pulling the door shut with a heavy thud. The Land Cruiser lurched forward, kicking up a thick cloud of red dust as it accelerated down the empty highway toward a future that had no end and no beginning.

Back across the ocean, in the silent, immaculate master suite of the grand estate, Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling window holding her crystal glass of water. The muddy foyer below had already been completely cleared and sanitized by the automated maintenance drones, leaving the white marble floor gleaming and pristine once more, as if nothing had ever happened at all.
She took a slow, calm sip, her blue eyes reflecting the bright, empty sunlight as she looked out over her quiet, unbroken kingdom.
