Chapter 5 - The Tilting Floor

The marble floor tiles beneath Julian’s knees shifted with a loud, mechanical grinding sound. He threw his arms out, catching himself against the edge of the large stone planter as the eastern section of the conservatory tilted at a sharp fifteen-degree angle. Water from the overflowing fountain at the center of the room began to rush toward his feet, carrying loose soil and flower petals into a dark drainage grate that had just popped open at the lowest point of the slope.

“Julian!” Clara screamed from the second-floor landing, clutching the wrought-iron railing so hard her knuckles turned white. “Hold on!”

Julian fought to keep his footing, his muscular frame straining against gravity as the smooth marble became as slick as ice under the rushing water. He gripped the base of the heavy stone planter with both hands, his fingers digging into the moist earth. He looked up across the open-air courtyard toward the mezzanine, but Elena was already gone, leaving only the glowing blue screen of her abandoned tablet resting on the railing.

“She’s playing with us!” Julian roared, a vein throbbing violently at his temple. “She wants us to break!”

“We have to get out of this wing!” Clara yelled back, her voice cracking with terror. She turned and ran down the hallway toward the master staircase, frantically searching for another way to reach him. But every door she passed was sealed tight, the smart-locks flashing a taunting red.

Back in the conservatory, the hydraulic whine grew louder as the floor tilted another five degrees. The drainage grate below Julian’s feet was now a gaping maw, sucking water and debris downward with terrifying suction. If he lost his grip, he would be pulled straight into the sub-basement machinery.

With a supreme burst of physical strength, Julian hauled his heavy frame upward, using the roots of the Monstera plant as an anchor. He kicked out with his mud-soaked foot, smashing the glass partition that separated the conservatory from the central hallway. Shards of safety glass rained down into the water below.

He lunged through the jagged opening just as the entire conservatory floor collapsed completely into the sub-level with a deafening crash of breaking stone and rushing water.
