Chapter 12 - The Open Door

The steel bars retracted into the ceiling with a smooth, mechanical hiss, leaving the master doorway wide open. The harsh, blinding light from the hallway spilled across the dark carpet of the cage, illuminating Julian and Clara where they sat huddled on the floor.
Julian slowly lowered the steel pen, his eyes fixed on the empty doorway. A moment later, Elena appeared in the frame. She wasn't holding a weapon, nor did she look angry. She stood there calmly in her white satin robe, holding a single glass of ice water, watching them with an expression of detached, clinical curiosity.
“Your time is up,” Elena said softly, taking a slow sip of her water. “Have you made a decision, or do I need to summon the drainage crew?”
Julian rose slowly to his feet, his muscular frame tense, his mud-caked skin gleaming under the hallway lights. He looked down at the briefcase on the floor, then back up at Elena. All the arrogance, all the cunning ambition that had driven him to betray her, had been completely stripped away, leaving only a hollow, exhausted shell of a man.
“You won,” Julian said, his voice barely above a whisper. “You planned this from the very beginning, didn't you? Even when I thought I was deceiving you, you were just leading me on.”
Elena set her glass down on a small table near the door, her blue eyes never leaving his face. “Deception requires intelligence, Julian. What you did was merely predictable. Greed is a very easy trap to set when the animal is already starving for status.”
Clara stumbled to her feet behind Julian, her dark wet slip dress clinging to her shivering body, her face streaked with dried mud and tears. She looked at Elena not with anger anymore, but with a profound, crushing defeat.
“Please,” Clara whispered, her voice breaking completely. “Just... let us go. We won't ever come back. We won't even speak your name.”
Elena turned her gaze slowly to Clara, her expression softening just enough to reveal a chilling, perfect indifference. “You are already gone, Clara. The moment you stepped across my threshold and into my husband’s bed, you ceased to exist in any world that matters.”
Elena stepped back from the doorway, gesturing toward the open hallway that led down toward the grand foyer.

“The helicopter is waiting on the roof,” Elena said quietly. “Don't miss it. The rotors start spinning in five minutes.”
