Chapter 3 - The Intercom’s Verdict

The metallic echo of Elena’s voice faded away, leaving only the sound of dripping water and their own ragged breathing. Julian stared up at the speaker grille, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. The reality of the situation was finally sinking in. Elena wasn’t throwing a temper tantrum; she was executing a calculated plan.

“Septic tank?” Clara whispered, horror washing over her pale face. She looked down at the swirling brown water lapping against the bottom of the grand staircase. “She’s going to treat us like household waste.”

“She wouldn’t dare,” Julian growled, though there was a tremor of genuine doubt in his voice. He had spent five years helping Elena manage her vast real estate empire, always believing he was an equal partner in their enterprise. He knew how cold her mind could be when crossed, but he had underestimated her capacity for calculated vengeance.

“Look at the water level, Julian!” Clara cried out, grabbing his arm with frantic strength. “It’s rising! The drainage grates are blocked from the outside. She didn’t just turn off our access; she rigged the plumbing.”

Julian pushed past her and waded toward the utility closet beneath the stairs, his bare feet slipping on the slick marble. He grabbed the brass handle and yanked. It was jammed tight, sealed shut with industrial epoxy. Elena had thought of everything. Every escape route, every manual override, every contingency plan he might try to exploit had been neutralized before she even opened the front door to confront them.

“We need to find another way out,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he scanned the room for structural weaknesses. “The service elevator shaft in the back hallway. If we can pry the doors open—”

“The service wing is biometric-locked too,” Clara interrupted, sliding down the banister until she sat on the lowest dry step, burying her face in her hands. “We are locked inside a vault, Julian. And the timer is ticking.”

Julian punched the epoxy-sealed door with his bare fist, a dull thud echoing through the foyer. He ignored the sudden pain shooting up his knuckles, staring at the red glowing security light above the front door.

“There’s a manual override key hidden in the conservatory,” Julian muttered, a desperate glimmer of hope sparking in his eyes. “My grandfather gave it to me before he passed. It’s an old mechanical bypass that doesn’t rely on the mainframe.”

Clara slowly lifted her head, her dark eyes wide with disbelief. “You never told me about a mechanical bypass.”
