Chapter 7 - The Ascent to the Master Suite

The grand staircase was the only path left upward, its white marble steps partially stained with streaks of dried mud where the floodwaters had receded slightly. Julian led the way, his heavy footsteps echoing in the cavernous silence of the foyer. Behind him, Clara followed closely, her bare feet shivering against the cold stone, her arms wrapped tightly around her shivering frame.
As they reached the second-floor landing, the air grew noticeably warmer, scented with the faint, expensive aroma of Elena’s favorite white tea and jasmine perfume. It was a jarring contrast to the damp, sewage-scented ruins downstairs.
The heavy double doors of the master suite stood wide open. Inside, light poured from the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating a room of immaculate, minimalist luxury. White silk curtains billowed softly in the morning breeze.
Elena sat at a polished mahogany vanity table, her back to them. She wore the same pristine white satin robe, her blonde wavy hair cascading perfectly over her shoulders. She was carefully applying a coat of neutral lipstick, watching her reflection in the gilded mirror without even turning around to acknowledge their arrival.
“I told you to choose your steps carefully,” Elena said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. “Yet here you are, tracking mud all over my Persian rugs.”
Julian stepped across the threshold, his chest bare and covered in dirt, his fists clenched at his sides. “It’s over, Elena. Drop the act. We know about the deeds, we know about the security lockout. You can’t just erase us like we never existed.”
Elena paused, the lipstick tube hovering inches from her lips. She slowly turned her head, meeting Julian’s furious gaze in the mirror with an expression of absolute, chilling serenity.
“Erase you?” Elena asked, turning her chair around to face them fully. She crossed one leg over the other, resting her hands lightly on the satin fabric of her robe. “Julian, I didn’t erase you. I simply returned you to the exact state in which I found you five years ago: penniless, powerless, and standing in the dirt.”
Clara stepped into the room, her voice trembling with sudden, desperate anger. “You invited me here, Elena! You knew about us! You watched us from these very cameras for months!”

Elena’s eyes shifted slowly to Clara, her gaze hardening into something resembling ice. “I watched you destroy my life, Clara. And now, I am watching you realize that every single thing you thought you stole from me was just bait on a very long hook.”
