Chapter 13 - The Roof Access

Julian didn’t look back as he walked out of the master suite, his bare feet padding softly against the pristine white carpet of the hallway. Clara followed closely behind him, her arms wrapped around herself as they navigated the winding corridors toward the spiral staircase leading to the roof helipad.
The air grew colder as they climbed higher, the sound of the wind howling outside growing louder with every step. When they reached the heavy glass roof door, it unlocked automatically with a soft click, swinging outward to reveal the gray, overcast sky and the sleek black silhouette of a twin-engine helicopter waiting on the landing pad. The rotor blades were already spinning, kicking up a fierce gust of wind that whipped their hair and clothes.
Julian shielded his eyes against the wind, stepping out onto the metal grating of the helipad. Clara stumbled out behind him, gasping as the freezing air hit her damp dress.
A pilot in a black tactical suit stood by the open cabin door, gesturing sharply for them to board. There was no greeting, no conversation—just the mechanical efficiency of a departure prearranged down to the second.
Julian paused with one foot on the helicopter's metal step. He looked back toward the glass access door leading down into the mansion. Through the reinforced panes, he could see a solitary figure standing in the shadows of the stairwell, watching them leave. Even from a distance, he knew it was Elena. She wasn’t celebrating; she was simply watching an inventory item being cleared from her ledger.
Clara shoved past him gently, climbing into the cabin and collapsing onto the leather bench seat, pulling her knees up to her chest. Julian took one last look at the sprawling estate below them—the grand mansion that had been his kingdom, his prison, and ultimately his tomb—before climbing inside and pulling the heavy cabin door shut.
The pilot immediately engaged the throttle. With a deafening roar of turbine engines, the helicopter lifted off the helipad, tilting forward as it surged upward into the gray clouds, leaving the luxury estate behind forever.

As the mansion shrank into a tiny dot beneath the rolling fog, Julian opened the leather briefcase in his lap and pulled out the new passport bearing a name he had never heard before. He stared at the blank photograph space, realizing with a cold jolt that his old life was truly, irrevocably dead.
