Chapter 10 - The Darkness Below

The darkness inside the steel cage was absolute, heavy and suffocating. Julian could hear the steady, shallow rhythm of Clara’s breathing a few feet away, punctuated by the occasional muffled sniffle as she tried to keep her composure. He remained standing against the steel bars, his hands still gripping the cold metal, his mind racing through every possible exit, every structural flaw, every loophole in the smart-home architecture.

There were none. Elena had designed this house herself before they met, back when she was an architectural engineer managing multi-million-dollar government contracts. She knew every load-bearing beam, every electrical circuit, every vulnerability in the blueprint.

“She’s going to wait until nightfall,” Julian said quietly, his voice raspy in the dark. “Then she’ll have the automated transport units transfer us off the property while the estate goes into lockdown mode for winter maintenance.”

“Transfer us where?” Clara asked, her voice cracking with terror. “To the police? To prison?”

“To nowhere,” Julian replied grimly. “Legally speaking, we don’t exist anymore. Our passports, our digital IDs, our bank accounts—everything was tied to the corporate entity she dissolved this morning. To the state, we are trespassers who vanished without a trace.”

A sudden, sharp mechanical click echoed from the ceiling directly above them. Before either of them could move, a heavy steel hatch in the ceiling of the cage sprang open, bathing the dark room in harsh, blinding white light.

Julian threw his arm up to shield his eyes. Through squinted lids, he saw a robotic drone descending slowly on a steel cable, hovering right in the center of the cage. Dangling from its landing gear was a small, metallic briefcase and a single sheet of heavy white stationery.

The drone lowered the items gently to the floor before retracting back into the ceiling hatch, which slammed shut with a final, echoing thud, plunging them back into darkness.

Julian cautiously stepped forward in the dark, his bare foot brushing against the leather briefcase. He knelt down, his fingers searching the surface until they found the heavy paper envelope resting on top. He picked it up, tearing the flap open with trembling fingers.

Using the tiny glow of his wristwatch display, Julian held the paper up to read the bold, typed words printed across the page.
