Chapter 2 - The Crimson Lock

The heavy thud of the oak doors closing felt like a gunshot echoing through the flooded foyer. Inside the swamp of the once-luxurious mansion, Julian slammed his mud-covered palms against the unyielding wood, roaring in sheer disbelief as the smart-lock pulsed a steady, mocking red. He threw his weight against the panels, but the reinforced steel framing held firm. The house’s automated security system had completely locked them out of the main wing.
“Elena! Open this door right now!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he realized the gravity of what had just happened.
Clara stood shivering by the grand staircase, her bare feet sinking into the sludge. She wrapped her arms tightly around her bruised body, staring up at the security cameras mounted in the corners of the ceiling. Those lenses were blinking green, meaning Elena was watching every single second of their humiliation from the comfort of a dry, climate-controlled master suite upstairs.
“She’s not coming back, Julian,” Clara whispered, her teeth chattering uncontrollably as the morning draft swept through the broken foyer windows. “She knew. She’s known for a long time.”
Julian spun around, his chest heaving, muscles bunched tight with adrenaline and fury. “She didn’t know anything. This is just a power trip. She’s playing games because she can’t handle the truth about us.”
“The truth?” Clara let out a hysterical, breathless laugh that dissolved into a cough. “Look around us, Julian! We are standing in raw sewage while she’s drinking coffee upstairs. Your access codes didn’t fail by accident. She wiped your biometrics from the mainframe.”
Julian gritted his teeth, wiping mud from his face with the back of his scarred hand. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the front gardens, testing the latches. They were welded shut from the outside. Every exit was deadbolted by the master override code that only Elena possessed. They were trapped inside a million-dollar cage of their own making.
Suddenly, the overhead speaker system crackled to life with a burst of static. Elena’s voice floated down, calm and devoid of any emotion.

“You have forty-five minutes before the automated drainage pumps activate and flush the foyer into the septic tank,” Elena announced through the intercom. “Choose your next steps carefully.”
