Chapter 9 - The Genetic Key

The glowing blue light of the computer terminal washed over Evelyn’s face, casting sharp, futuristic reflections in her wide, dark eyes. She stood tall despite her small frame, looking remarkably unafraid as Dr. Aris Thorne’s gaunt face watched her intently from the central monitor.
“Evelyn,” Dr. Thorne said, his voice dropping into a gentle, reassuring tone that contrasted sharply with his frantic panic just moments before. “Do you see the small circular port beneath the screen? The one shaped like a half-circle?”
Evelyn nodded slowly. Without a word of hesitation, she lifted the silver crescent moon pendant hanging from her neck, detaching it from its leather cord. She pressed the metal half pendant directly into the recessed biometric port on the terminal.
A sharp, high-pitched electronic chime echoed through the vault.
Instantly, the monitors flared from blue to a blinding, solid crimson. Streams of encrypted code cascaded down the screens at impossible speeds, followed by a robotic female voice droning overhead: “Warning. Master biometric lock engaged. Verifying genetic lineage... Please wait.”
Julian stepped closer, watching the monitor with bated breath. He looked down at Evelyn, a sudden wave of protective dread washing over him. “Is it going to work? What does this actually do?”
Marcus Vance leaned heavily on his brass-headed cane, his eyes narrowed as he stared at the rapidly scrolling data. “It doesn’t just lock the firewall, Julian. This terminal is connected to every offshore account, patent holding, and legal deed belonging to Vance-Sterling Holdings. For thirty years, Victor Sterling has been siphoning our assets under a fraudulent receivership. This command sequence legally transfers the entire controlling interest back to the direct bloodline.”
“Which means,” Dr. Thorne interrupted from the screen, his voice trembling with urgency, “Evelyn is now the sole legal owner of the entire empire. And Victor Sterling is officially a corporate nobody with a massive criminal record.”
Before anyone could celebrate, the overhead lights in the bunker flickered violently and died, plunging the room into total darkness save for the harsh red glow of the computer monitors.
A heavy, metallic grinding sound echoed from above—the sound of hydraulic breaching charges being set against the massive steel security door of the underground parking bay.
“Security breach detected,” the automated system announced calmly. “Bulkhead integrity at forty percent. Estimated time to breach: ninety seconds.”
Marcus cursed under his breath, turning to Julian with absolute urgency in his eyes. “They found us faster than I calculated. Julian, take the girl and the master flash drive. There’s an old drainage tunnel behind the server racks. It leads straight out to the river.”
Julian grabbed Evelyn’s hand, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. “What about you and Dr. Thorne? I’m not leaving you behind to face Victor.”
May you like
“We’re ghosts, Julian,” Marcus said with a grim, defiant smile, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket and tossing it to his nephew. “And it’s time we finally laid ourselves to rest. Go!”
